Civil Engineers employ Silkstone to carry out site investigations for developments they are designing, mainly to enable the design of appropriate foundations for buildings. Most Civil and Structural consultancies have sufficient in house experience to deal with routine foundation design but in more complex circumstances, they will turn to a specialist consultancy for advice. The information required by engineers ranges from the shallow bearing capacity of the rocks or soils in the development zone, to problems further afield or at depth that may cause problems at a later date. Examples of these include steep slopes close to the development, which need to be checked for safety, and the subsurface coal mining history of the area, which may lead to subsidence problems. In each case Silkstone can arrange appropriate testing and investigation, and if required advise on appropriate measures to protect the development against foundation failure.

Silkstone are considered to have a high degree of expertise in Coalfield-related problems and Coal Measures geology in general. We have been employed as expert 'sub-consultants' by other consultancies on this basis.
